August is a Great Time to Visit!

In our opinion, mid to late August is the absolutely best time to visit the Maya Rivera! Stasha and I, and many of the friends we invite, prefer to visit Casa Tortuga at this time of year for many good reasons. School is about to begin in the United States and Canada, so the high season summer crowds from North America have pretty much disappeared. The Europeans have arrived, but in much smaller numbers and the feel of the place is much different. The weather is great, too!

Doing Nothing is Good for the Soul

Stasha and I first visited and fell in love with Soliman Bay in December of 1999.  We purchased the two beautiful beach front lots upon which we constructed the first version of Casa Tortuga in 2000.  At that time, there was no Super San Francisco Super Mercado in Tulum and the Tulum beach was much less developed.  The highway was still two lanes from the Cancun Airport to Tulum.

Hanal Pixan – Day of the Dead

On October 31st Tulum and the rest of the Mayan Riviera will be preparing for Hanal Pixan meaning “The Feast for all souls”. This is the Mayan equivalent to the Mexican Holiday Day of the Dead.

Hanal Pixan is the day when the souls arrive to visit their families and enjoy the festivities and their favorite foods! On the evening of the 31st families prepare a feast of the departed’s favorite dishes. A shaman blesses the food and welcomes the souls of the dead.

The Mayan Ruins

There are several very well preserved and interesting Mayan ruins located very near Casa Tortuga. The closest is in Tulum which is a short 5-6 km from Casa Tortuga. This site is relatively recent and was apparently visable by the Spanish as they first sailed along the Carribean coast in the 1400′s.

By this time most of the very sophisticated, large cities of the Yucatan were in ruins. The civilation of the Yucatan was at it’s height of development and city building around the time of Christ, with many cities on the Yucatan pennisula supporting thousands of people. Most of the ruins have yet to be excavated.
